    Description

MINIATURE PORCELAIN ROYAL VIENNA STYLE DRESDEN PORTRAIT VASE 100% HAND PAINTED
A finely executed porcelain cabinet vase done in a mixture of Royal Vienna and Dresden decorating styles.
It is 100% hand painted and features three (3) full length portraits (2 women and 1 man) in 18
    th
    century dress.
The three portraits are separated by elaborate hand painted gold scrollwork.
The areas on the vase above and below the portraits show a maroon colored body and those areas are further accented with hand painted gold trim as well.
There are tiny enamel gold beads all around.
The gold work is really exceptional on this one.
The vase appears to be artist signed “AR” – see the last photo.
Since the original Royal Vienna factory closed in 1864 dozens of firms produced their own versions of the decorating style originally produced by this factory in what the following book describes as the “post-1864 private enterprise” period.
These pieces were typically marked with a beehive mark (although this one is not).
My source for this information is the book
    Godden’s Guide To European Porcelain
by Geoffrey Godden from Chapter 5 entitled “
    Vienna and Vienna-styled Porcelains
    ”.
I want to be clear that this piece is not an original Royal Vienna piece but is decorated in a style similar to the original Royal Vienna factory as described in the previous paragraph.
A strikingly beautiful little cabinet vase that is in great original condition!
Don’t miss this opportunity to own it.
The underside of the vase is marked with a blue overglaze triangular Dresden mark and a gold triangular “paint over” mark on top of a Rosenthal Bavaria mark.
Most of the decorators in this era did not make their own porcelain blanks, but rather bought them from other firms, so the porcelain blank was made by Rosenthal.
    According to the book
Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain 1710 to the Present
by Robert E. Rontgen the Rosenthal mark on this vase was used circa 1891 – 1907 and is shown on page 137 of this book.
The blue triangular mark appears to be the mark of the decorating firm Heufel & Company in Dresden and was in use after 1891.
This mark is shown on page 147 of this same book.
There is also an impressed “317” number in the porcelain on the underside.
I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.
Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.
However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.
I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.
    Age and Condition
    Circa 1900.
It is in excellent original condition.
Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.
There are no chips, flea bites, cracks, hairlines, scratches or repairs.
There is some minor loss of the gold beading consistent with a piece of this age – see the photos.
Rings like a bell when tapped anywhere!
    The portrait area is unmarked.
Really in extremely fine condition for a100+ year old piece of hand-painted porcelain.
Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times bigger in the photos than it really is.
Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.
It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.
    Approximate Dimensions
About 2.5” (6.4 cm) in diameter and sits about 4.375” (11.1 cm) tall.
    Approximate Weight
    About 4 ounces (114 grams).
